3-6 months to obtain grant of probate. A further 3-18 months afterwards to complete estate administration. The timescale may be affected by a sale of a property or having to deal with queries raised by HMRC.

The probate of an estate valued at £900,000 being a mixture of property and investments which is non-contested would cost approximately £6000 plus VAT and would be charged on a hourly rate basis. Carried out by Tracey Galley whose qualifications are Solicitor, with no supervision required. Disbursements would include the Probate Court Fee of £155 plus £3 to obtain six sealed copies of the grant and commissioners’ fees of £7 none of which attract VAT. From instruction the key stages of the process are as follows, taking client instructions, assessing estate value at time of death, preparing probate papers, discharging IHT liability if relevant, securing grant of probate, encashing or transferring estate assets, discharging estate liabilities, distributing balance in accordance with Will or Intestacy provisions and dealing with income arising during the administration period and is likely to take on average about 6-24 months for the matter to complete.
